20,000 Houstonians Unite in Downtown Houston at The 42nd Annual “Original” Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade
FUN FACT: Houston hosted the first, ever, Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in the nation on January 21, 1978. The grand marshal on that historic day was Martin Luther King Sr., also known as “Daddy King.” Talk about star power!
Fast forward to 2020, and Houstonians are still showing up and showing out to celebrate the life and legacy of MLK. Thousands of spectators and parade participants —20,000 to be exact— gathered downtown last month for the 42nd Annual “Original” Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade.
Hosted by The Black Heritage Society and the City of Houston, the parade featured more than 10 marching bands, eight decorated floats, dance teams, military and ROTC groups, first responders, city and county officials, and other civic and community organizations from around the world. Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman also led the parade as this year’s Grand Marshal.
